KACC statement on Mwiraria tapes - unauthenticated 24.01.2007

KACC takes this opportunity to respond to statements appearing in the media on 23rd January 2007 attributed to Mr. John Githongo's release of tape recordings of former Finance Minister Hon. David Mwraria.
KACC acknowledges having possession of tape recordings of former finance minister Mwiraria and Kiraitu Murungi by former PS Governance Ethics John Githongo. The tapes are the same ones that had been released earlier by Mr John Githongo in Feb 2006.
Following the allegation by Mr John Githongo that the former ministers interfered with investigations on Anglo Leasing and other security related contracts, the commission opened and inquiry to establish the allegations.
The investigations were conducted and after analysis of the evidence alongside other evidence collected, it was found that there was no sufficient evidence to charge the ministers with obstruction according to both the penal code and the anti-corruption and economic crimes act.
The information on the tapes is not new to the commission. We would like to reassure the public that KACC is still continuing with investigations into the 18 Anglo Leasing Security type projects and when they are complete, the public will be duly informed.

Signed,
Nicholas Simani
